As part of the 1992 York Festival the Mystery Plays were produced in York Theatre Royal for the first time, from 13 June to 15 July, with 150 local amateur actors and professional Robson Green as Christ.
There was also a production of five of the Passion Plays, on wagons in Stonegate and Petergate on 20 and 21 June, organised by Meg Twycross of the University of Lancaster.
From 29 June to 3 July 1992 the courtyard of Barley Hall was the setting for three Plays: 'Mak and the Shepherds' from the Wakefield cycle and the York Plays of 'Herod' and of 'the Three Kings'. The last two were traditionally played together, according to Medieval World magazine of May-June 1992. Herod was presented by the Mason's Guild and the Three Kings by the Goldsmiths, who could supply crowns for the Kings. William Snawsell/Snowshill, one of the residents of the house which became Barley Hall, was a goldsmith and may have had connections with the play. Proceeds from these plays went to the Barley Hall Restoration Fund - the fifteenth century timber-frame building was then being restored by the York Archaeological Trust.
